Use your words carefully
November 2024
During the past year or so people of all walks have been in turmoil one way or the other, including Christians. It seems some of us have lost our ability to think and reason rationally, we have let our emotions direct our lives and speech, and we can’t even think straight. Blame it on politics?
We argue to be heard and not to listen. Some of us have turned to being short-tempered, quick to condemn and judge, and not caring about others, even family members and friends, especially those of the other party. Could it be politics causing this dilemma?
I believe it is time for us Christians to examine our attitudes and mannerisms and if they are out of line with what our actions are supposed to be according to Jesus’ commands, repent and make corrections. 2 Corinthians 13:5, tells us to: Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you—unless, of course, you fail the test?
Some of the things to examine are how are you treating the people closest to you? Are you short-tempered, not respectful, and only consider your feelings? Scripture tells us exactly what we need to do to return to our first love and to love others.
In general, scripture gives us wisdom on how to treat all people; relatives, strangers, friends, and foes. However, many guidelines we are to follow are very difficult for some of us to obey and it becomes a struggle. But with God, all things are possible (Matthew 19:26).
We are to remember and test ourselves to see if we are keeping His words or doing our own thing. Consider if we are following; 1 Corinthians 13:4-5, Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; Thessalonians 4:11 aspire to live quietly and mind your own affairs; Matthew 5:9 be peacemakers; Romans 12:17 repay no one evil for evil; Galatians 5:22 live out the fruits of the spirit; Colossians 3:13 forgive each other. Are you following this code?
I have one last scripture to consider and it should be taken seriously; 1 John 2:4, He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
And remember to forgive and you will be forgiven! Matthew 6:14, I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
