It’s a righteous hate
Yes, He does. But it is a righteous hate. He hates what is contrary to His nature—He hates what is contrary to love.
When the Bible does speak of God’s hatred, the object of His hatred is sin and wickedness, and His hate is righteous.
Psalm 5:5 says about God, “You hate all evildoers,” Psalm 11:5 is even harsher: “The wicked, those who love violence, he hates with a passion.”
Mal. 1:3, “but Esau I have hated. I have laid waste his hill country and left his heritage to jackals of the desert.”
Rev. 2:6, “Yet this you have: you hate the works of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate.”
Proverbs 6:16-19 “There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.” Notice that this passage does not include just things that God hates; it includes people as well.
Psalm 139:21-22 “Do I not hate those who hate you, O Lord? And do I not loathe those who rise up against you? I hate them with complete hatred; I count them my enemies.”
Psalm 26:5 I hate the assembly of evildoers, and I will not sit with the wicked.
Psalm 119:128 “Therefore I consider all your precepts to be right; I hate every false way.”
2 Chronicles 19:2 “But Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him and said to King Jehoshaphat, “Should you help the wicked and love those who hate the Lord? Because of this, wrath has gone out against you from the Lord.”
Zechariah 8:17 “Do not devise evil in your hearts against one another, and love no false oath, for all these things I hate, declares the Lord.”
Psalm 119:163 “I hate and abhor falsehood, but I love your law.”
Hosea 9:15, “every evil of theirs is in Gilgal; there I began to hate them. Because of the wickedness of their deeds, I will drive them out of my house. I will love them no more;” All their princes are rebels.
Just as anger can be righteous, it can also be evil and sinful. anger. With all the thoughts and attitudes in play, there are conditions and restrictions, so we must be careful not to abuse the right to hate and show anger.
If people try to practice total love in everything without considering responsibility, accountability, consequences, and truth, then the world would be in chaos because there will always be sin and the lack of love. And in the end, only the strong and ruthless would survive and would control those who only love. Therefore, hate, dislike, and the ability to display righteous hate in a manner consistent with God’s teaching are appropriate.
God is also love; however, He does not allow love to blind Him to the truth and responsibilities people have, especially to those who say they love Him.
1 John 4:8, “anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”
John 14:15“If you love me, obey my commandments.
Romans 5:8, “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
2 Peter 3:9, “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.”
John 13:34-35, A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
We cannot love with perfect love, nor can we hate with perfect hatred. But God can both love and hate perfectly, because He is God and nothing is impossible for Him. But with us, it’s a different story. We must imitate God in these and all circumstances.
Many times, we say I hate when in reality we mean dislike, disapprove, or have an aversion. When we say “hate,” it brings to mind very negative and sometimes violent feelings or thoughts, not just to the one speaking but possibly to those hearing the word.
Hate is a very strong word and should not be taken lightly when speaking it, so we need to remember to use it cautiously and correctly, and when acting out on it, make sure it is a righteous hate and respond appropriately.
