THE blessings OF FEAR
What is fear of the Lord according to scripture? Are we blessed when we fear the Lord?
“The fear of the Lord is a foundational biblical doctrine, essential to a right relationship with God. It stands at the heart of Scripture, woven throughout both the Old and New Testaments.” Proverbs 9:10 says: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.”
“True wisdom begins with an accurate understanding of who God is. I once believed that fearing God meant living in dread of His anger, expecting immediate punishment for my sins. In reality, the fear of the Lord is not a fear of punishment, but a profound reverence for His holiness, power, and authority. Isaiah even describes the fear of the Lord as a treasure.” Isiah 33:6 The fear of the Lord is His treasure. And His promises include: Proverbs 19:23 The fear of the Lord leads to life, and he who has it will abide in satisfaction, He will not be visited with evil.
In the New Testament, the fear of the Lord remains relevant for believers. The apostle Paul writes: Proverbs 1:7 “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” True knowledge is revealed through a healthy fear of God. Worldly knowledge is ultimately useless in light of eternity, for all earthly things will pass away. Genuine knowledge is found in God and in obedience to His precepts. Exodus 20:20 “Do not fear, for God has come to test you, that the fear of Him may be before you, that you may not sin.” When you understand how serious sin is to God and how He finds it wretched, filthy, abominable, self-serving, and evil, then you naturally gravitate to fearing Him because sinning is the last thing you should want to do. When you understand that God could think you out of existence, this healthy fear will motivate you not to sin and pursue righteousness instead.
God wants to bless you and give you good things. Psalm 31:19 Oh, how abundant is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you.”
The Holman Treasury of Key Bible Words asserts that genuine fear of God (demonstrated through keeping His commands) “results in spiritual, moral, and ethical health and wealth before both God and people.”
Other blessings we receive from fearing the Lord are;
Psalm 34:9-10 “Fear the LORD, you His saints, for those who fear Him lack nothing. We will have all we need!
Proverbs 22:4 adds, “The rewards of humility and the fear of the LORD are wealth and honor and life.”
Psalm 25:12-14 declares, “Who is the man who fears the LORD? He will instruct him in the way he should choose. His soul will dwell in prosperity, and his descendants will inherit the land.
Psalm 34:7 assures,“The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear Him, and he delivers them.” This protection is a testament to God’s faithfulness to those who honor Him
Proverbs 19:23 further states,“The fear of the LORD leads to life, that one may rest content, untouched by trouble.”
Isaiah 33:6 also highlights, “He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the LORD is the key to this treasure.”
Proverbs 8:13 declares, “To fear the LORD is to hate evil; I hate arrogant pride, evil conduct, and perverse speech.”
Luke 1:50 “And his mercy is for those who fear him from generation to generation.”
Hebrews 13:6 “So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”
Luke 12:32 “Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom.”
Fear God and be blessed!
